Guide to Pet DNA Kits

DNA testing has become a very popular way for people to find out their ancestry and background. For those whose background is not clear, DNA tests can provide information that can be exciting to discover.

In the same way, it is possible to discover the background of your dogs and cats. This can provide such information as breed makeup, which can be very useful, especially for keeping your pet in the best of health. Even if your pet looks like a purebred, this test can tell whether that is accurate or whether you have other breeds’ traits to consider, as well.

Other things that can be learned through DNA testing of your pet includes temperament, dietary needs, and potential genetic disorders.

Some veterinarians may offer DNA testing for your pets, but that would involve a visit to the vet, and everyone knows that most pets resist that as soon as they realize what is happening! There are several companies that are currently offering home DNA tests for pets. The different companys’ tests will have many similarities, but also some differences. Some of the things that will matter when choosing the right pet DNA test kit will include the accuracy, how easy it is to use, what breeds are included in the testing, and, of course, how much the kit costs.

Most home DNA tests are generally processed the same way. Start by collecting the animal’s DNA by running a cotton swab on the inside of your pet’s cheek, about two hours after eating, so the saliva will be cleaner. Place the sample into the provided packaging, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Mail the sample to the company. In a few weeks, you will receive a report that lists all the information obtained from the sample.

Some kits may also include enough supplies to test your pet’s parentage, by swabbing the cheeks of the animals that may be the parents as well. The lab can then compare the samples and determine if the younger animal is, indeed, offspring of both the older animals.

A few kits use a blood sample instead. These require a trip to the vet to get the sample, which is then packed and mailed off to the manufacturer for processing. This method also results in a report sent to you through email or snail mail.
