Guide to Potty Plungers

The water is rising, and the stress is rising with it. It is nearing the edge! What to do? Grab the plunger and bust that clog! This scene happens daily in homes around the world. It is a simple thing, but sometimes people might wonder which is the best plunger to use, or what is the best method for unclogging the drainpipe.

Too many times a plunger is not considered until an emergency happens. Prepare yourself ahead of time by determining which plunger you prefer and providing one for use in your bathroom areas before you need it.

Types of Plungers

Sink plungers are different from potty plungers. Sink plungers are basic cups that just cover a drain in a flat surface and provide suction or pressure to clear a clog, while toilet plungers include an additional flange which fits down into the drain a little to better aim the pressure or suction where it is needed.

1. Cup Plunger

While some people do use this type of plunger in their bathrooms, it is inefficient and better suited for sinks and tubs than for toilets.

2. Flange Plunger

This is like a cup plunger, but with the added flange underneath. It looks very similar but is meant to use in drains that have a smaller opening. The flange fits into the smaller opening while the cup above seals the overall drain area.

3. Accordion Plunger

Similar to the flange plunger, the “cup” section of these are bellows-like and accordioned to add extra pressure (or suction) to each movement of the plunger.

4. Automatic Plunger

These plungers that blow carbon dioxide into the pipe do an amazing job at unclogging the drain. It uses a CO2 cylinder each time you use it.

5. High Pressure Plunger

This type of plunger has a cup at the bottom and a pump at the top to provide much more powerful pressure to clear the drain.

Tips for Plunging

It seems pretty simple – stick the plunger in the toilet and push, right? Well, that is accurate, but there are ways to make it more effective, and less likely to throw toilet water all over your bathroom accessories

  • Fill the plunger with water.
Air compresses more than water does, so it will be more effective if you make sure the cup of the plunger contains water rather than air. This will provide more pressure when you push down, increasing the likelihood of clearing the clog.
  • If you have a standard toilet, keep the handle vertical.
Other shapes of toilets may not work as well with a vertically oriented plunger, but the standard shape will clear more easily if the plunger is vertical.
  • Start slow.
Instead of shoving the plunger in and vigorously jamming it in and out (which is likely to splash nasty water all over the bathroom), start with a gentle pump or two and add force if it is needed, gradually. Smaller plunges are more likely to break up a blockage due to the repeated movement of the water against and around the clog.
